Why We Lose Heart
It can be depressing to look at America’s statistics about heart disease and its related conditions and death rates. Most of our country is obese, sedentary, and on several medications.
On the other hand, did you know that in several less-developed nations—some we may even consider “third-world” or simply those that rely less on technology and live closer to their indigenous roots—heart disease is nearly absent?
That’s right. Although we live in a country with access to high-tech medical procedures and advanced drug therapy, our incidences of cardiovascular disease or circulatory problems such as hypertension, stroke, angina and atherosclerosis are of epidemic proportions.
Why is that?
While there is evidence that genetics plays a part, it all comes down to lifestyle. Only in severe cases do genes override lifestyle. You may have heard the adage, “genetics loads the gun; lifestyle pulls the trigger.”
There’s no way around it—with the average American high-fat diet and sedentary lifestyle, and not to mention the high level of stress and anxiety in our lives, plaque builds up in our arteries.
And if the blockage is in a heart artery, the stage is set for a heart attack. If it’s in a brain artery, it can lead to a stroke.
It’s a grim reality that our risk factors are woven into the way we tend to live our lives.
